Hello Dr. Kretzschmar,
We received your fax question about the Astra-Zeneca vaccine dated 14.5.2021.
We currently have a policy on the 3 vaccines allowed by FDA under EUA. The FAA reviews medications that have been FDA approved. We understand that an international pilot may have access to a different vaccine.
Functionally, people who take other non-FDA approved vaccines will not “lose their license” any more than a person that takes an antibiotic not approved in the US for an infection. Both of these are short term/episodic and 14 CFR 61.53 applies. Pilots should ground themselves until the medication or intervention is out of their system and all side effects have resolved.
Let us know if you have further questions.
Dr. Frazier
