Lisbon and Algarve – CFMU routing fun all the way to the tip of Europe
14. Juni 2011: Von Jan Brill  Twin < 5,7 to. PAY1

Mainz Finthen EDFZ | Luxembourg ELLX | Cascais LPCS | Portimao LPPM | Cordoba LEBA

Lisbon for business then 8 days vacation in an Algarve Resort (Martinhal). Initial fuel stop in ELLX then one leg to Lisbon's GA-field Cascais (LPCS). Avoid LPPT due to high fees and parking restrictions. Cascais is a great GA field.

Routing was fun though: 932 NM great circle distance. Blitzplan.de came up with a 1.003 NM route that would have taken us all the way out over the Bay of Biscay. With a 9 months old on board and no raft, we wouldn't do this, not even in a Cheyenne. Rocketroute.com offered the same routing at >FL200. So I went to manual mode and came up with:

MMD DCT LASIV DCT BRY DCT POLLY DCT ARKIP /N0220F220 UQ237 LMG UN10 SAU UN10 ENSAC /N0220F180 R10 BTZ R10 SSN /N0220F240 B190 DGO G52 NEA G52 ZMR G52 RIVRO /N0220F180 G52 MAGUM DCT LIS

… which is also only 966 NM and was approved by CFMU IFPUV.

Reality was very different then: French ATC would not let us fly southbound via LMG. Not for the world. Lot's of small scale "tactical vectors" in the air, then back on the planned routing over SAU and the rest smooth sailing. 4:39 block time.

We choose to get handling at LPCS even though it's not mandatory. But after two legs and >5 hrs in the air with wife and baby we needed a quick transfer to the hotel. Taxi came right up to the aircraft, and 10 mins after shutdown we were on the road to Bairro Alto. Nice Hotel, not ideal for kids though.

Short hop from LPCS to LPPM two days later. 35 mins. On VFR flightplan due to mandatory FPL in Lisbon TMA. We were treated and vectored like IFR nevertheless.

LPPM is a small and nice GA field with lots of parachute jumping. Parking space is limited. Hotel shuttle came right up to the aircraft, very friendly and helpful staff at the airport helped push the bird back into it's spot. Only cash payment.

Martinhal is great of you like Brits with kids. Wonderful facilities. Ideal with kids 1-10 years old. 7 days was quite enough for me, wife and little-one wanted to stay longer, so we added a day to our vacation. That's the nice thing about traveling GA.

On the way back we refueled in Cordoba (LEBA) due to better fuel prices in Spain. Ideal GA field. Fuel payment is cash or BP carnet. LEBA frequency is not manned, use US-CTAF procedures. Works like a charm.

For the return trip the CFMU-struggle began anew. LEBA-EDFZ routing was initially via Zurich and Stuttgart!!! That made 1.032 track miles out of 916 NM great circle. After only a few hours of manual routing I emerged CFMU approved with:

ALCOL/N0220F250 IFR UN871 GAI UV12 SOMTI/N0220F190 V12 CFA A27 MOU G21 GIVOR V36 AKELU N852 LIMGO Z110 BITBU/N0220F170 Z555 ROPUV Q760 ODVUX VFR

… which was 996 NM with some "potential" for directs. But beware! After TOU we were sent ever eastwards to ETREK and LTP. I started to suspect we were being routed via Switzerland again. With 30-40 KTS headwind all the way from Spain that would have meant minimum fuel in EDFZ. Not an option. Some tense negotiations in the air. Then a compromise: ETREK and then direct EPL at FL230. That worked. After a long 5:02 block time finally back at the homebase in EDFZ.

Initial routing ELLX-LPCS. Too far offshore for us.
